Pickled Cucumber (200g net, 110g drained)
Jane and Paul’s Orkney Produce range was developed through our love of working with seasonal and locally sourced ingredients to create luxury, bespoke treats for you, and gifts for others. All JP Orkney Produce is homemade with care in our Birsay kitchen, right by the sea.
Pickled Cucumber is packed with flavour. No sharpness or vinegaryness here! The cucumber and onion transform into piquant sweet vegetables when infused with distilled junipers from Deerness Distillery. We use cold-pressed Scottish rapeseed oil to create a vinaigrette from the liquor. It works beautifully paired with rye, cured meats, smoked fish, baba ghanoush and salty cheese.
The History of Pickled Cucumbers
Pickled cucumbers have an enthralling history that spans across centuries and continents. Their eloquent journey arguably began in the ancient lands of Mesopotamia as early as 2030 BC. Cleopatra of Egypt was supposedly utterly smitten by these briny gems.
Others believe that the development of pickled cucumbers occurred during the construction of the Great Wall. The story goes that workers were in need of sustainable food supplies.
The humble, crunchy pickle has since made its way across the globe to join us in our storm-lashed Orkney Isles.
We produce our pickles with a generous dose of Orkney spirit in our Birsay kitchen by the sea.
We invite you to join us in crafting memories and stories one crunchy bite at a time.
