It’s rhubarb season here in Orkney, and we’re surrounded by the most beautiful, vibrant stalks coming out of our kitchen garden. Whether you’re cooking at home, packing a picnic, or joining us on one of our tours, we always say rhubarb is one of those magical ingredients that carries the taste of spring in every bite.
We thought we’d share a few of our favourite ways to enjoy it – including some treats you’ll find right here in our shop, handmade with love in our Birsay kitchen by the sea.

1. Enjoy Our Small-Batch Rhubarb Goodies
We’ve bottled up some of our favourite seasonal rhubarb recipes so you can enjoy them at home.
- Orkney Rhubarb Jam: Tangy rhubarb with a touch of vanilla – lovely on warm scones, layered in a Victoria sponge, or added to a cheese board for something a bit different.
- Rhubarb & Raspberry ‘R&R’ Jam: This one’s vibrant, fruity and has a whisper of star anise. Perfect for Bakewell tarts, chocolate cakes, or stirred through Greek yoghurt.
- Orkney Rhubarb Chutney: A gorgeous all-rounder – fruity and gently spiced, great with sausage rolls, hard cheeses, or just oatcakes and butter.
These jars are regulars in our tour packed lunches. We often feature them in our corporate catering menus too. They’re part of what makes our food feel like Orkney – seasonal, thoughtful and full of flavour.
2. Bake It Into Something Brilliant
Got fresh rhubarb to hand? Try:
- Rhubarb & almond traybakes (add a spoonful of our R&R jam for extra fruitiness)
- Classic rhubarb crumble with oat topping – perfect with a wee drizzle of cream or custard
- Rhubarb upside-down cake, especially with orange zest or ground ginger
- Bakewell tart made with our Orkney Rhubarb Jam in place of traditional raspberry
All of these pair beautifully with our chutneys and relishes too; don’t be afraid to get creative!
